project description

“The Possibility of Metamorphosis” was an interactive, visual and auditive poetry installation created especially for the 9 indoor rooms of the Skovvilla and the outdoor space at ArtCenter Silkeborg Bad.

The theme was - among other things - an exploration of metamorphosis through an examination of the marvellous time span and function of the pupa. The installation consisted of “word book”, a visual book of poetry that – among other things - was the storyboard for the development of the poetical installation that contained a number of alphabets: “Alphabet of childhood I” (names of flowers written 100 times with water on slate); “Alphabet of childhood II” (text with the legs of spiders);
“Alphabet of oblivion” (600 different heart-shaped objects);
“Alphabet of recurrence” (texts in neon, scratched out writing of girls’ names on black-painted window glass, reading of Danish soldiers’ names from the work “2739 af de i Verdenskrigen faldne” (“2739 of those killed in the Great War ”)); “Alphabet of help” (365 sheets of paper with words collected over a year, written and given to Astrid Gjesing by strangers. Guest could take the sheets of words and replace them with new ones. More than 200 did);
“Alphabet of waiting” (handwritten texts sand-blasted in glass);
"now" (written with wind- and water-worn pieces of glass found on the beach) and electric and acoustic composition by James Howard Young for flute, with read texts by Astrid Gjesing. Outdoors “now” (nu) (coal).
